The Second Commandment.........
"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them"
All links are dark red.

This Commandment, in Exodus 20:4-6, seems to be an easy Commandment to follow. Do any of us actually bow and and worship an idol?

We want something to help in the worship of God. We want something to remind us of the invisible God. Yet that is exactly what is forbidden in this commandment! In John 4:23-24, Jesus said: "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth: for the Father is seeking such to worship Him"

He goes on to say that "God is Spirit: and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth". God is almighty and, when we use an image of God, we limit our preception of God.

Does this mean that art of God is condemned? No, it is when you worship them and bow down to them that you sin against the Second Commandment. Since we don't really know the true God, we want to have an aid to help with our concept of God when we worship. It is the use an idol or image to help you when you worship that God condemns.

How can any image or statue or written word capture the awesome power and glory of Almighty God? Everything on earth including our imagination and the earth itself falls short. God is indescribable and unimaginable. Therefore, anything that we use to represent God when we worship is actually blasphemy and forbidden by the Second Commandment.
